Learning 101….Old School/New School

Submitted by Karl Newman on Monday, 1 September 2008No Comment

Growing up through traditional education in Public Schools, I was told to study and learn my lessons, or I “would never amount to anything”.  As hard as I tried, I had to struggle through my school work… test were never easy for me, and I dreaded the day Report Cards came out.  On the other hand, my Sisters, seemed to flow through the toughest subjects effortlessly, and always were on the Honor Role… Why couldn’t I learn as easily as they did?

It was in my early 20’s that I met my first Mentor, who taught me some very basic learning fundamentals.  He explained that I never “Learned How To Learn”.  He showed me so simply, how to apply what I learned, and how to develop my newly learned skills.  He helped me find my primary learning style, and nurtured my quest for knowledge… and I’ve never been the same ever since.

That was over 25 years ago… and now, over 10,000 books later, and a dedication to the Training Industry as my primary business throughout the last couple of decades… I thought I would go “Back To Basics”, and share the simple Lessons on Learning that he shared with me.

I encourage you to listen to each of these 4 short “Podcasts” to “relive the lessons” that made such a profound impact on me, when Learning transformed from a “chore” to an exciting “challenge”, and was the catalyst to build a successful career.

Here is the first of four consecutive daily posts.

Learning To Learn… The 5 Levels of learning

  1. Exposure -Initial exposure to new material
  2. Review -Repeat & review new concepts
  3. Application - Apply & utilize new material
  4. Ownership - Internalize new concepts
