The Library of Second Life Literary Foundation

Submitted by Tawny Press on Sunday, 6 July 2008No Comment

Our research currently is focuses on Second Life, by Linden Labs, yet we continue to explore other platforms.

In my exploration, I came upon The Library of Second Life Library Foundation. A collection of rare volumes and fine manuscripts.  A treasure and a great example of how these evolving 3D environments, can enhance the educational experience, of various ages.

As I arrived at the destination, I was amazed at the ornate detail of the building and fine attention to detail. As I walked up the steps, I wondered if the inside would be as grand and I was not disappointed.

The library is an amazing creation of grandeur.  The beautiful staircases, the tapestry rugs, fine wood, the ornate detail on the wall covering and the grand staircase.  I could hardly wait to explore.

The first floor

I went to the left and found the first floor library.  It was full of books written by various authors.  The Story of Miss Moppet, written by Beatrix Potter, was the first book opened.  Upon touching the pages, they began to turn, and I saw the incredible illustrations, reproduced.  There was also a drop down menu, to give the reader more control.

I soon turned to admire another book containing paintings by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. Paintings of dogs playing poker, pool and more.  The reproduction of the illustrations are outstanding.

Then I found, Feline Fancies & Mouse Pie, The Cats of Luis Lain and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, 1865.  Each book was a creation in itself.  I felt as if I was in a real world library.

As I walked out of this first library, there was a cozy fireplace and seating area for visitors.  On the table is a audio book, Around the World in 80 Days, by Jules Verne.  It was available for listening while in the library.

On the opposite side of this building, is a set of double doors, inside is a library of audio books.  All available for use within the library.  A few were on sale for 10-25 linden dollars, for use after leaving the library. *

Second Floor

After I explored the audio book selection, I walked up the grand staircase, to the second floor.  This library was full of books written by English Poet and Painter, William Blake and his portrait overlooked the room from above the fireplace.

The first book I came upon was “Songs of Innocence & Experience.  The original book was first published in 1789 and again upon completion in 1794.  Yet in 2008, it sits in a 3D Virtual World for a new generations to experience, using the wonders of technology.

There are a few more doors, I have not yet explored, but I will be back.

After spending a few minutes exploring, I started up to the third and last floor in this three dimensional building.  Saving the best for last.

Third Floor

Upon reaching the top of the spiral staircase, there was William Shakespear’s portrait, the man whom this floor is dedicated. Presented as grandly as the other books, in this library, these books had been created to recreate the look and sound of hold parchment.  The sound of the turning pages was changed in this room, to create that old, delicate, fragile sound of page turning.

Some of the titles here are, A Midsommer Night’s Dreame, The Tragedie of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark; The Tragedie of King Lear; The Tragedie of Othello the Moore of Venice, among others.

Near the entrance of this room, is another audio book, Romeo & Juliet which is available for listing while in the library.

As I prepared to leave the library, I had one more stop near the main entrance.  I placed a complimentary set of audio books, War & Peace volumes I, II & III, in my inventory to listen to while I continued to travel and explore new educational locations.*

The library Grounds

The grounds have surprises too.  There is a giant old elm tree, where you can site and enjoy the sounds of water and the beauty, while playing a game of Jahjong, at a table for two.
There is also a Ancient Section of the Library, containing the Works of Greek Philosophers, Illiad and Odyssey.  This is located behind The  Library of Second Life Literary Foundation.

I have visited this location, five separate times, and each I have discover new rooms or something I had not noticed on previous visits.  This post is provide only a example of this destination.  To thoroughly enjoy its many wonders, you will have to transport to this location and explore yourself.

Would love to hear how you liked the experience and any others you have discovered, that are of a education nature.
